Preparing for your appointment
The clinic will provide preparation guidance when your appointment is confirmed. Where suitable, wax-softening drops may be advised for several days beforehand. Do not use drops if you have been told you have a perforated eardrum unless a suitable healthcare professional advises you to do so.
Do not insert cotton buds, fingers or other objects into the ear canal. Tell the clinic about ear surgery, perforated eardrums, grommets, current infection symptoms, severe pain, discharge or medicines that may affect bleeding.

Occasionally wax is too hard, access is limited, symptoms have another cause or treatment is not clinically appropriate. The clinician will explain the safest next step, which may include further preparation, another appointment or referral.
