Tinnitus

Assessment and practical tinnitus support

Tinnitus can affect concentration, sleep and wellbeing. A professional assessment can help clarify possible factors and identify appropriate management strategies.

Understanding your tinnitus experience

Tinnitus is the perception of sound without an external source. It may be heard as ringing, buzzing, humming, hissing or another sound.

An audiology appointment may explore your symptoms, hearing, ear health and the effect tinnitus has on daily life. The discussion can then focus on practical, evidence-informed management and appropriate referral where needed.

Support may include

  • Hearing and ear-health assessment
  • Clear explanation and reassurance
  • Sound-enrichment strategies
  • Communication and sleep guidance
  • Hearing technology where appropriate
  • Referral advice for medical or specialist support

Urgent symptoms: call 999 or attend A&E for tinnitus after a head injury, or tinnitus with sudden hearing loss, facial weakness or a spinning sensation. Ask for urgent medical advice if tinnitus beats in time with your pulse.
